Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future
September 15th to October 15th
Greater Bergen Community Action is proud to honor and acknowledge our Latino staff and clients during Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme: Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future is particularly powerful for GBCA, where we are committed to expanding educational and economic opportunity for disadvantaged members of our community.
First observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week” in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, this recognition of the important contributions of Latinos in the United States has similar roots to GBCA. The Civil Rights Movement and The War on Poverty encouraged the US to begin to look at all its members, recognize their contributions to the fabric of America, and begin to advance the rights and privileges of the United States for all who live here.
Sadly, as we sit here in the Fall of 2020, we know that the promises of the 1960’s have not come to fruition; our work is not done, in fact it is more important than ever.
The Covid-19 Pandemic and subsequent economic downturn has hit the Latino community especially hard and therefore, the community needs to be given extra help to heal and rebuild. GBCA is committed to serving the Latino community of northern NJ as we all step gingerly on the road to recovery and then boldly build new paths to prosperity.
At GBCA, we believe that health, safety, quality education and economic opportunity are rights not privileges for all our friends and neighbors. To our Latino friends and neighbors, Be Proud of Your Past and Embrace Your Future.
En las malas se concoce a los amigos
(In bad situations is where you know who your friends are)
Know that GBCA is a friend, a friend that will be by your side as we embrace a brighter future together.
